THE CHALLENGES FOR FLOOR GRAPHICS INSTALLERS

Floor Graphics: The Real Challenges Installers Face and How to Solve Them

You finish installing a floor graphic late at night in a busy supermarket. The print looks perfect. The client is happy. The store opens the next morning.

By the afternoon, the edges are starting to lift.

For many installers, this situation is all too familiar. Floor graphics operate in one of the toughest environments in print. They guide customers through spaces, promote offers and help brands stand out, while needing to withstand constant foot traffic, cleaning regimes and strict safety requirements.

Unlike wall or window graphics, floor media is exposed to continuous abrasion from shoes, trolley wheels, and cleaning equipment, often across surfaces that vary widely in texture and composition.

When something goes wrong, it tends to happen quickly and very visibly.

The good news is that most floor graphic failures are predictable and avoidable. Understanding the common challenges installers face is the first step to delivering reliable results.

Are you using the right material for the application?

One of the most common causes of failure is simply choosing the wrong material.

Vinyl that performs well on walls or windows may not be suitable for floor use. Retail environments place significant stress on graphics, particularly in high-traffic areas such as entrances, aisles, and checkout zones.

Before selecting a product, installers should consider:

  • The intended lifespan of the graphic
  • The level of foot traffic in the area
  • The type of floor surface
  • The building’s cleaning regime

Specialist floor vinyls and laminates are typically designed for campaigns lasting from a few weeks to several months depending on traffic levels.

Using materials engineered specifically for floor applications is not just best practice, it is essential to achieving predictable performance.

We Stock A Comprehensive Range Of Floor Graphic Solutions

We stock printable floor vinyls for 3-6 month flooring campaign graphics.

To compliment our floor print films, we also stock a range of print laminates suitable for all types of promotional floor graphics, ranging from 1-12 months indoors, and up to 6 months external.

Why do floor graphics sometimes lift or peel?

Another common issue is graphics lifting shortly after installation.

In many cases the problem lies not with the print itself but with the condition of the floor surface. Retail floors may appear clean but often carry residues from cleaning chemicals, waxes, or polishes. These coatings are designed to protect the floor but can prevent adhesives from bonding properly. Dust and moisture can also affect adhesion.

Different surfaces such as tiles and polished concrete can all behave differently, particularly if coatings or sealants are present.

For best results, the surface should be thoroughly cleaned and degreased before installation and allowed to dry completely. If the floor surface is unfamiliar or its condition uncertain, applying a small test patch can quickly confirm whether the adhesive will bond effectively.

What about slip safety in public environments?

Slip safety is a critical consideration when installing floor graphics in public spaces.
Floor graphics are commonly assessed using the pendulum test, which measures slip resistance by simulating a heel striking the surface.

The test produces a Pendulum Test Value (PTV) between 0 and 100. Industry guidance generally considers a PTV of 36 or above in wet conditions to indicate a low slip risk for pedestrians.

Slip resistance may also be classified using DIN 51130 “R” ratings, which range from R9 (lowest slip resistance) to R13 (highest).

In general:

  • R9: suitable for dry environments
  • R10: acceptable where surfaces are generally dry
  • R11–R13: appropriate where surfaces may be exposed to wet conditions and external use

Understanding these ratings helps installers ensure graphics meet safety expectations in environments such as supermarkets, shopping centres, and other public spaces.

How long should floor graphics last?

How long will it last?’ is one of the most common questions and the answer depends largely on where the graphic is installed.

Graphics in quieter areas may remain in place for several months, while those located near entrances or busy aisles may experience wear much sooner. Heavy foot traffic, trolley wheels and mechanical cleaning equipment all contribute to abrasion.

As a result, many floor graphics are designed as short-term communication tools rather than permanent installations. Setting realistic expectations at the outset helps ensure the chosen materials match the intended campaign duration.

Will the graphic remove cleanly afterwards?

Many floor graphics are installed for temporary promotions, exhibitions or seasonal campaigns. When the campaign ends, clients expect the graphics to be removed quickly without leaving adhesive residue or damaging the floor.

Using media designed specifically for temporary floor applications can make this process far easier. These products are formulated to provide reliable adhesion during use while allowing cleaner removal afterwards.

Thinking about removal at the start of the project can save significant time and effort later.

Preparation makes the difference

Most floor graphic challenges come down to preparation and product selection.
Assessing the floor surface, choosing the appropriate material, and following good installation practice all contribute to better results.

When installers understand the challenges before starting the job, floor graphics become easier to install and far more reliable in performance.
