Graphics Application Tape: The Complete Guide to Transfer Tapes for Self-Adhesive Films
Whether you’re producing vehicle graphics, shop signage, wall decals or custom stickers, graphics application tape is one of the most important tools in the installation process. While the vinyl itself often gets all the attention, choosing the correct transfer tape can make the difference between a quick, professional installation and a frustrating application.
In this guide, we’ll explain exactly what transfer tape is, the different types available, how to choose the right product for your project, and answer the most common questions about graphics transfer tape, application tape, and application paper.
What Is Graphics Application Tape / Graphic Transfer Tape ?
Vinyl graphics application tape (sometimes called vinyl transfer tape, graphics transfer tape, application tape or application paper) is a specially designed adhesive-backed material used to lift cut vinyl graphics from their backing paper and transfer them accurately onto the final surface.
Without transfer tape, applying individual letters, logos or detailed graphics would be extremely difficult, as each element would need to be positioned separately.
Application tape keeps every piece of the design perfectly aligned while allowing the installer to position the entire graphic in one movement.
Why Is Transfer Tape Important?
Using the correct transfer tape offers several important advantages:
- Maintains accurate spacing between letters and graphics
- Speeds up installation
- Prevents distortion of vinyl graphics
- Makes complex designs easier to apply
- Reduces installation errors
- Improves overall finish and professionalism
Whether you’re applying signage to windows, walls, vehicles or exhibition displays, transfer tape ensures your finished graphics look exactly as intended.
The Different Types Of Graphics Application Tapes / Transfer Tape
Not all application tapes are the same. Choosing the correct type depends on the vinyl being used, the size of the graphic and the installation method.
Paper Application Tape
Paper application tape is the most commonly used option for sign making and general vinyl graphics.
Benefits include:
- Easy to handle
- Breathable, helping reduce trapped air
- Excellent for wet application methods
- Available in multiple tack levels
- Cost-effective for everyday use
Paper application tape is ideal for:
- Shop signage
- Vehicle lettering
- Wall graphics
- Window graphics
- General sign production
Clear Film Transfer Tape
Clear film transfer tape allows installers to see through the tape during application.
This makes clear film transfer tape particularly useful for:
- Multi-layer graphics
- Precise logo positioning
- Registration of coloured vinyl layers
- Intricate decals
The transparent film provides excellent visibility, making accurate alignment much easier.
What Does ‘Tack’ Mean?
‘Tack‘ refers to how strongly the application tape grips the vinyl.
Selecting the correct tack level is one of the most important decisions when choosing transfer tape.
High Tack Application Tape
High tack transfer tape is designed for:
- Matt vinyl
- Textured vinyl
- Small lettering
- Intricate cut graphics
- Difficult-to-release vinyl films
The stronger adhesive helps lift smaller pieces cleanly from the backing paper.
Medium Tack Transfer Tape
Medium tack is the most versatile choice and works well with:
- Standard gloss vinyl
- General signage
- Vehicle graphics
- Window decals
- Most everyday vinyl applications
It provides reliable adhesion while allowing easy release once the graphic has been applied.
Low Tack Application Tape
Low tack application tape is generally used for:
- Delicate graphics
- Temporary graphics
- Large printed decals
- Certain digital print applications
Using tape with too much tack can sometimes make removal difficult, particularly with softer printable films.
Paper Application Tape vs Clear Transfer Tape
Choosing between application paper and clear transfer tape often comes down to the job you’re completing.
Paper Application Tape
Advantages:
- More economical
- Easy to tear by hand
- Excellent for wet application
- Helps reduce air bubbles
- Popular with professional sign makers
Clear Film Transfer Tape
Advantages:
- Transparent for accurate positioning
- Ideal for layered graphics
- Excellent visibility
- Perfect for detailed logos
Many sign professionals keep both types available, selecting the best option depending on the project.
How To Choose The Correct Graphics Application Tape
Several factors should be considered before choosing transfer tape.
Type of Vinyl
Different vinyl films require different tack levels.
Gloss calendared vinyl usually works well with medium tack tapes, while matt or textured films often benefit from higher tack adhesives.
Size of the Graphic
Large graphics generally work well with medium tack paper tape.
Small lettering and intricate cut details often require higher tack products to ensure every element transfers correctly.
Surface Being Applied To
The installation surface also influences the choice of application tape.
Examples include:
- Glass
- Aluminium composite panels
- Painted walls
- Acrylic
- Vehicles
- Plastics
Smooth surfaces generally make installation easier than textured materials because a smooth surface has more physical surface area for the adhesive tape to come into contact with and therefore to adhere to.
Installation Method
Some installers prefer dry application, while others use wet application techniques.
Paper application tape is often preferred for wet applications because it allows moisture to escape more effectively.
How To Apply Vinyl Using Transfer Tape
Following the correct process produces professional results.
- Step 1
Weed away the unwanted vinyl. - Step 2
Apply the transfer tape smoothly across the graphic using a squeegee. - Step 3
Burnish firmly to ensure good adhesion between the tape and vinyl. - Step 4
Turn the graphic over and carefully remove the release liner. - Step 5
Position the graphic onto the application surface. - Step 6
Squeegee firmly from the centre outwards. - Step 7
Slowly remove the transfer tape at a low angle.
If any vinyl begins lifting, simply lay the tape back down, burnish again and continue peeling slowly.
Common Problems When Using Transfer Tape
Vinyl Won’t Lift
Possible causes include:
- Tack level too low
- Insufficient burnishing
- Cold working conditions
- Old vinyl
Transfer Tape Won’t Release
Possible reasons include:
- Tack level too high
- Removing too quickly
- Surface contamination
- Vinyl not fully bonded
Air Bubbles
Avoid bubbles by:
- Cleaning the surface thoroughly
- Applying firm, even pressure
- Working from the centre outward
- Using the correct squeegee technique
Storage Tips
To maximise performance:
- Store rolls upright where possible.
- Keep in a cool, dry environment.
- Avoid direct sunlight.
- Keep away from excessive heat.
- Store in original packaging until required.
Proper storage helps maintain adhesive performance and prevents curling.
Graphics Transfer Application Tapes – Frequently Asked Questions
Is transfer tape reusable?
Generally, no. Most application tapes are designed for single-use applications to ensure consistent adhesion and accurate graphic placement.
Can I use masking tape instead?
Masking tape lacks the correct adhesive properties and is not designed to transfer cut vinyl graphics accurately. Purpose-made vinyl transfer tape provides significantly better results.
What’s the difference between transfer tape and application paper?
In most cases, they’re simply different names for the same product. “Application paper” usually refers to paper-based transfer tape, while “transfer tape” can refer to either paper or clear film versions.
Which transfer tape should I use for small lettering?
High tack application tape is usually the best choice for intricate lettering and detailed graphics because it provides stronger adhesion during transfer.
Can transfer tape be used with printed vinyl?
Yes. However, many printed graphics require lower tack tapes to prevent lifting the print or laminate. Always match the tape to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Choosing Quality Application Tape
Using a high-quality vinyl graphics application tape improves installation speed, reduces waste and delivers cleaner, more professional results.
Whether you’re applying simple vinyl lettering or complex multi-layer graphics, selecting the correct combination of tack level, material and width helps ensure every installation goes smoothly.
From standard paper application tape for everyday signage to clear film transfer tape for precise graphic alignment, choosing the right product allows you to achieve accurate, consistent and professional-looking vinyl graphics every time.
A Re-Cap On The Best Tape to Choose For Your Different Graphics Transfer Projects
For vinyl graphics, the best choice of application tape will depend on the type of vinyl you are applying and the surface you are applying the graphic onto.
For general self-adhesive transfer of cut vinyl or printed films, the industry standard / most well known is RTape Conform 4075 RLA* (*Release Liner Adhesion), but KleenTear KT75 High Tack works equally as well.
For more specialised projects, you can use these alternatives to transfer your cut vinyl graphics.
For transferring a standard vinyl (Matt or Gloss):
Use a medium-tack paper tape like RTape Conform 4050 Medium Tack, or RTape KleenTear KT50 Medium Tack.
Medium Tack tapes will work sufficiently for most vinyl graphic image transfers.
For small lettering or intricate designs, especially for matt vinyls:
Use a high tack transfer tape like RTape Conform 4075 High Tack or RTape KleenTear KT75 High Tack.
High tack transfer tapes will ensure the vinyl releases cleanly from its backing paper and will allow even the most stubborn lettering to release from the liner.
Both RTape Conform 4075 and KleenTear KT75 work well for ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ graphic application methods.
For wall graphics:
RTape Conform 4078 Medium Tack application paper is the ideal choice because it releases easily from applied graphics without pulling the graphics back off the wall.
Can be used for both ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ graphic application methods.
For transferring graphics onto difficult vinyl surfaces:
Use RTape Conform 4885 Super High Tack application tape with an ultra-high-tack rubber adhesive designed for very small lettering and graphics and hard-to-lift films.
Can be used for both ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ graphic application methods.
For graphics printed with UV graphics:
Use RTape Conform 4760 Medium Tack application paper, which has been designed specifically for graphics printed with UV inks and use with clear coats.
Conform 4760 works well for both ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ graphic application methods with no adhesive transfer.
For layering vinyl or stencils:
Use a clear, low-tack tape like KleenView KV40 medium tack clear transfer tape so you can see the exact alignment over your previous vinyl layers.
We also offer a slitting service for cutting rolls to the widths you specify.
You can input the widths you need when placing your order online, or speak to one of our sales team if ordering over the phone.
Slitting charges
Slitting of Application Tapes is free.
For slitting rolls of other materials down to narrower widths there is a nominal £8.00 per roll slitting charge for the first 3 x slits/cuts, and an additional £3 charge for each subsequent slit/cut, per roll.
Example 1: if you require a roll of 1300mm to be slit into 2 narrower rolls of 650mm wide, then the slitting charge would be £8.00 (1 slit/cut required).
Example 2: if you require a roll of 1300mm to be slit into 5 narrower rolls of 260mm wide, then the slitting charge would be £11.00 (4 slits/cuts required).
Minimum roll length we will slit is 5 linear metres.
Minimum slit/cut roll width is 10mm wide.
PLEASE NOTE: one end of every roll width cannot be cut to any less than 50mm wide.
Example: if a 610mm wide roll is to be slit/cut into 10mm widths, then 55 slits/cuts will be the maximum possible, resulting in 56 widths of 10mm and a 50mm off cut.
We cannot re-slit material on 2″ cores.
